For more than 13 million years sandalwood has grown in the vast, ancient land of Australia, preserved for more than 60,000 years by the Martu people - traditional custodians we work with today.
As a proudly 50% Indigenous-owned business, we make unique Australian sandalwood oils by fusing a sustainable mix of wild-harvested wood with cultivated wood - creating a regenerative system that allows biodiversity and people to thrive.

-
A scent that transcends time and place
While Australian sandalwood shares the same woody notes of other sandalwoods, the oil also has a unique and complex character -its fresh, spicy, earthy and subtle floral notes reminiscent of the raw and pristine land upon which it naturally grows.
From florals to ambers, Australian sandalwood helps to amplify other notes while contributing its own spicy-cream woodiness on dry-down. It also adds an unmistakeable warmth and depth, as seen in classics such as Santal 33, Santal Blush and Angel.
With this olfactive complexity and its rich connection to land, culture and spirituality, Australian sandalwood lends vibrancy and naturalness to a composition, even at low concentrations.
-
A direct and unbroken chain of custody
As a business, we work to honour the past, present and future of Australian Sandalwood, ensuring its continued sustainable supply for generations to come. To do this, we fuse a sustainable mix of Indigenous and Government wild-harvested woods with cultivated wood sourced from endemic forestry projects which regenerate salinity-stricken farmland.
We have safeguarded our supply by diversifying at scale through ownership or long-term contracts – ensuring we can preserve native stands while creating a consistent oil quality now and into the future.

A product enriched by purpose
When you use Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils, you are an important part of a regenerative system of sandalwood production that ensures biodiversity and people thrive. In 2019 we were humbled to win the UN Equator Prize for our work.
Benefits flow back to Aboriginal people in the form of profit-share, wood sales and community projects to support Indigenous-led conservation, replanting and youth empowerment - helping to preserve the 60,000 year legacy of the Martu people, custodians of 'Dutjahn', the Australian sandalwood species.
-
Exacting standards to produce the finest oils
We conduct select distillations by provenances - some exclusive to Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils - before blending the grades to specific proportions. The result is the finest quality Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) oils denoted by their chemistry, purity and complex aromas. Products can be specifically formulated for olfactive or chemical specificity, with opportunities for custom-blends controlling notes such as smokiness, greenness or woodiness. As well as analysis for chemistry and purity, each batch is appraised and endorsed by our in-house perfumers to ensure we preserve the highest olfactory standards.

“We would like to thank Indigenous communities who’ve made this partnership possible… We sought an ethically sourced sandalwood oil that met our scent profile, quality metrics, and allowed for improved visibility of the sourcing, production and supply process. After an extensive and diligent search, in 2018 Aesop partnered with Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils… We’re proud … of working with communities in a regenerative way.”
